As with many old City churches, the first written records that mention St Botolph without Aldgate date back to the 12th century, although an earlier Saxon church was probably on the site as evidence of 10th or 11th. Aldgate (/ˈɔːlɡeɪt/) was one of the gates in the former defensive wall around the City of London.

It gives its name to Aldgate High Street, the first stretch of the A11 Road which included the site of the former gate. The locality of Aldgate is focussed around the former gate and the High Street and includes part of the City and parts of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
